Tips to Help You Study for your Florida Contractor License

Obtaining your contractor license requires years of building experience, financial stability, and – the most important piece of the puzzle – passing the contractor exam. Even if you meet all of the other requirements for your Florida contractor’s license, you still must pass the exam in order to become a licensed contractor and start building your career and in order to achieve it you need to study Florida contractor license.

That is why we are sharing some really important tips to help you pass the Florida general contractor exam with flying colors and move one step closer to achieving your dream of owning your own contractor business.

Here are some tips to help you study for the general contractor exam:

  • Just because it’s an open book test, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know the book. The test for the general contractor license is partially an open book test. Some people believe that, because the test is open book, it is not necessary to read the book. However, you must know general knowledge about the exam, study Florida contractor license and the layout of your book in order to complete the exam on time.
  • Know what to expect for the exam.

Think about the exam just like you would approach a sporting event. When you attend a baseball game, you know what to expect: nine innings. When you attend your exam, you need to know what to expect in the layout of the test so that you can plan your time during the exam appropriately. Here is the layout of the exam:

The Florida contractors  exam is an open-book exam that is given in a two-day time period. One day is a computer based testing for Business, Accounting and Project Management. This is given at an approved computer testing facility at any time of your choosing.

The other day is administered by the State of Florida, Bureau of Education and Testing approximately every six-weeks, and in three (3) locations in Florida (Miami, Kissimmee, and Tallahassee) at the same time. This is often called the Technical part of the exam. It will cover plan reading, math, estimating and technical construction knowledge.
