How to Get an Electrical Contractors License in FL

A man wearing a hard hat and a red shirt is working on electrical wires Getting your Electrical contractors license in FL can be a complicated process, but if you utilize the right resources, you can get through it without even breaking a sweat. There are several steps that must be taken to ensure that your licensing requirements have been met and you are ready to get your business off the ground.

At Contractors Reporting Services, we are exp erts in the field of contractor licensing and corporation set-up . It is our job to guide you through each step, answering your questions along the way, in order to expedite and simplify the licensing process. The requirements for becoming an Electrical Contractor in FL will vary slightly, depending on whether you cho ose to become registered (permitted to operate only within your city, county or municipality ) or certified (permitted to operate state-wide). Here are the general application requirements, according to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation :

  1. You must b e 18 years of age .

  2. Show Good Moral Character. This means,

  3. You have acted with honesty and integrity in your dealings with the public

  4. You have no pending litigation or judgments , such as bankruptcies or tax liens

  5. You have no criminal past relating to your business, i.e. embezzlement or physical abuse .

*If you do have a criminal history, you are not automatically disqualified from obtaining your license as a General Contractor in FL, but there are additional steps that you wi ll need to take to be eligible .

  1. Experience / Education Requirements must meet one of the following compositions:

  2. Must have three (3) years of management experience in the trade of electrical/alarm/specialty contracting within the last six (6) years immediately preceding the filing of the application; or

  3. Must have four (4) years of experience as a foreman, supervisor or contractor in the trade within the last eight (8) years immediately preceding the filing of the application; or

  4. Must have six (6) years of comprehensive training, technical education or supervisory experience associated with an electrical or alarm contracting business within the last 12 years immediately preceding the filing of the application; or must have at least six (6) years technical experience in electrical or alarm system work with the Armed Forces or a governmental entity within the last 12 years immediately preceding the filing of the application; or have a combination of these qualifications totaling six (6) years of experience; or

  5. Must be licensed as an electrical professional engineer for three (3) years within the last 12 years. Provide a copy of current electrical professional engineer license and transcripts showing electrical engineering work; or

  6. Must have a combination of experience listed in 1-3 above totaling 6 years within the last 12 years.

  7. Study hard and pass the state exam with a score of 70% or higher.

  8. Submit a copy of your Credit Report .

  9. Submit a Personal & Business Financial Statement to s how proof of financial responsibility.  

  10. Show proof of Liability and Worker’s Comp Insurance

  11. Pay the required licensing fees. ($300 for an active license)
